This was the moment of truth. This decided my summer. We were sitting on the very old family room furniture waiting for the decision. It could go either way. My mom is the softy so she could probably sway my dad but then my dad is a hard ass on his own. Plus, I had Kara’s parents to think about as well. And then they started to speak.
“We have discussed this very thoroughly.” It sounded funny coming from my dad because he had such a deep voice. “And we have some ground rules that you are going to need to follow if you are going on this trip.” Before they could even tell us the rules, I was jumping up and down hugging Jordan, my twin brother. Then my dad cleared his throat and we shot down in our seats. That’s kind of his mad call. So we listened further. “These are the rules.” He laid down a piece of paper that seemed a lot like a contract. “You are both going to sign this. If you do not follow the rules given, Jordan, you will not be getting a new car and Olivia, your cell phone, iPod and basically life will be taken away for the rest of the year.” These were some pretty tough rules but I knew they would be.
“So what are the rules?” I figured we should probably have a good idea of what we are signing up for.
“Good question, Olivia. The rules are as follows: you will call us every night and every time you get to a check point. You will give us a list of all the places you will be stopping. You will not pick up any hitch hikers or tell anyone where you are going. You will plan out every stop, gas station and hotel before you go on this trip. You will not be staying in any cheap hotels. Your mother and I will give you the needed amount of money but anything else is up to you to pay for. Are we understood?”
Jordan and I both shook our head vigorously. I was so happy!
“Oh honey,” My mom finally spoke, “do you know if Kara’s parents are letting her go?” I have to call her!
“I will go call her now.” I was about to get up when my dad did his “clear his throat” thing again. “Sign the paper first.” So I was right, pretty much a contract. I signed it really fast and then ran upstairs to my room to call her.
I picked up my very old cell phone, which I loved very much, and speed dialed Kara. “I CAN GO! CAN YOU GO?” She was basically screaming in my ear but I was about to do the same to her.
“YES! I’m so excited! This is going to be the best summer ever!”
“Agreed; so when should we get planning?” So that night Kara came over and we planned out the whole thing. I asked Jordan if he wanted to help but he figured he would leave it up to us.
“So we are starting here and ending in Florida.” She pointed to our state, Washington and drew a line all the way down to Florida. We planned to take about two weeks to get down to my aunt’s house in Florida and then stay there for about two weeks. And finally, make our hike back to Washington to start our senior year. We marked out every hotel, gas station and historical land mark just like my dad asked us to do. It turns out Kara’s parents wanted the same thing, so it kind of worked out.
We were up until three that morning planning stuff out. We ended up falling asleep with our heads next to each other with all of the information scattered around us.
Jordan came in at like eleven and woke us up. He didn’t mean to but he was looking at the plans and managed to crumple enough papers to slowly wake us up.
“Wow, you guys worked your asses off last night.” I smiled at our amazing work. “Are you guys done?”
“I think we are. We just have to figure out what day we want to leave. Everything is good from there.” This was the most exciting part to me; figuring out what day we will leave.
“How about Wednesday?” That was in two days! That was so like Jordan to pick such a soon day.
“Okay!” Kara decided she agreed with that day. I guess we could manage that.
“Alright, let’s go show our parents.” Kara called her parents and they came over with her little sister, who was a freaking genius. They were all seated at the kitchen table and listening intently while we showed them out information.
The whole time I was praying that they would like it. We had the best hotels and other than that we picked the cheapest stuff. We wanted to go to the local diners and see all the town stuff. Between all of us, we had seven hundred dollars. I mean we didn’t need much. Our parents were paying for gas, hotels and food. But we wanted to go places, see things that we had never seen before. Plus, we needed stuff for emergencies.
So we finally finished everything and waited for their responses. Of course my dad spoke first. “I think you guys did a fine job gathering this information. I appreciate all of the effort you put into this. I think I speak for everyone here when I say ‘Have fun.’” He actually smiled and I was so happy. This summer was going to be great.
